Mark Cuban, President Obama Among National Small Business Week Highlights

Last week was National Small Business Week – one week during the year when local governments, national brands, and small business owners come together to support local commerce and entrepreneurship in communities across the U.S.

As a sponsor of National Small Business Week for the third year in a row, YP℠ was proud to take part in many of the activities planned for the week.

YP’s Vice President of External Affairs and Compliance, Amy Healy, tweeted from the opening events, held at both the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and the United States Peace Institute in Washington D.C., where top honors were awarded to organizations working to empower, educate, and finance small businesses.

The “Small Business of the Year” award was announced on Monday – with Brooke McDonnell and Helen Russell from Bay Area-based Equator Coffees & Teas earning this well-deserved distinction. Mark Cuban of ABC’s “Shark Tank” fame took to the stage to honor McDonnell and Russell, also using the time to share entrepreneurial tips to an audience of small business award winners from the 54 states and territories – each with a great story of commitment and perseverance, the two essential ingredients for success.

Throughout the week, local Small Business Administration (SBA) branches hosted free boot camps, round tables, and networking events. YP marketing consultants and brand managers joined the festivities at National Small Business Week Live in Atlanta, where a panel discussed innovation in Atlanta’s tech businesses as well as at the Phoenix SBA’s SmallBizCon ’16 and the Summit on Entrepreneurship and Innovation in San Jose.

On Tuesday, YP hosted a live discussion, attended by more than 1,000 people from all four corners of the country, about the leading cloud, mobile, and social tools that small business owners can use to manage and grow their businesses. Other sponsors presented on a number of topics, including: cyber security, payment processing technologies, employee benefits, and beyond.

A common thread in all of these discussions was the need for small business owners to stay proactive and adaptable in the face of changing trends and evolving technologies. And this is precisely where the marketing experts at YP come into play. We understand the constantly-changing digital space and work with businesses of all shapes and sizes to create smart strategies to help their businesses grow. But it doesn’t stop there. We constantly track, measure, and optimize those strategies to make sure they continue to deliver results over time.

For business leaders from some of America’s top companies, the week finished strong with a Friday afternoon conference call with President Barack Obama. Participants asked questions about economic policy as well as the administration’s plans for supporting small business growth.

Small businesses play an important role in strengthening the nation’s economy, building the character and vibrancy of local communities, and driving innovation that ultimately influences the future of commerce – at home and around the world. As a long-time partner and supporter of local businesses, it was a privilege for YP to be a part of this annual event, celebrating the many small business heroes who make this country tick.
