Recap – YP @ National Small Business Week
As an official sponsor of National Small Business Week, YP℠ spent all of the last week participating in a series of events honoring the entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners across the country – about 28 million of them, to be exact.
The week’s festivities kicked off in Washington, DC on Sunday, April 30 at the National Institute of Peace where YP’s Director of Product Marketing, Frank Cifelli participated in a panel discussion entitled, Social Media Tips for Your Business, to talk about the benefits of integrated marketing. Speaking to a very attentive audience, he explained that “while an organic Facebook post may reach only three percent of your target audience, the rest can be reached through a well-integrated advertising program made up of mobile, online, and traditional media.”
U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Administrator, Linda McMahon – along with a number of leaders from organizations that serve small businesses, including YP’s CEO, Jared Rowe – also paid tribute to the Small Business People of the Year at an awards luncheon. “You make us feel like proud parents on graduation day,” she said, “except you already have jobs.” She also shared her own challenges as a small business owner, noting that she and her husband once shared a desk, giving all in attendance one bit of advice: “It’s not how you fail, but how you get up.”
YP also had booths set-up and team members on hand to engage and educate attendees at local National Small Business Week events in Indianapolis, Arlington, and Fresno.
Getting Our Voice Out There
In addition to having a presence at a number of official National Small Business Week events, we took every opportunity to share our unique point of view with small business owners as well. Here are just a few things we did to make sure YP had an impactful voice throughout the week.
- As part of our sponsorship, we hosted a webinar entitled, 5 Fabulous Habits of Local Business Champions, where our very own Vice President of Portfolio Marketing, Holly Bowyer, and GrowBiz Media CEO, Rieva Lesonsky, shared insights with over 1,300 attendees about the best practices all business owners should put into action in order to grow their businesses. - Our CEO, Jared Rowe, and EVP of Product and Marketing, Stu MacFarlane, joined several morning radio shows across the country to spread the word about the important role small business play as part of the fabric of our economy as well as how YP effectively connects local businesses with local consumers. Said Rowe in one of the interviews, “Small businesses can’t afford to have empty calories in their marketing diet.”
- We also brought a bit of National Small Business Week in-house, hosting a “YP Exchange” event where hundreds of team members from across the country tuned into a webcast, featuring Stu MacFarlane and Rieva Lesonsky (see above), about the importance of websites for small businesses. Lesonsky summed it up nicely, “If a business doesn’t have a website, it’s like opening up a store and not putting up a sign.”
We also made sure YP had a voice in the many conversations swirling around the web during National Small Business Week. Not only did we do our part by keeping our social feeds – Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter – buzzing with information, updates, and pictures throughout the week, but we also participated heavily in a Twitter Chat entitled, Starting and Growing Your Small Business, hosted by SCORE Mentors and Rieva Lesonsky.
All in all, we were proud and honored to be part of yet another successful National Small Business Week. But our work is far from done. In 2017 alone, we’ll be participating in 17 Small Business Expos across the country.
